The Ottoman Empire conquered the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empire was the eastern portion of the Roman Empire that survived after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Ottoman Empire, led by Mehmed II, captured the Byzantine capital, Constantinople (now Istanbul), in 1453, resulting in the end of the Byzantine Empire and the beginning of Ottoman rule in the region.
