Identify a Cause:

Based on your learning in this unit, what is one factor that led to the major difference between the Northern and Southern economies that you identified in Item 1? You might talk about the resources available in each region, the climates, political and religious views of the people who lived there, or another factor.

Answer in one short sentence (20 word limit). You will have a chance to explain in more detail later.

Example sentence frame: One reason for this difference is that the North ___, but the South ___.

(A good answer will be clear, concise, and historically accurate.)

One reason for this difference is that the North had a more industrialized economy, but the South had a predominantly agricultural economy.

Explain the Connection:

Why do you think the factor you named in your last answer caused such a big difference between the economies of the North and South?

Answer in 50 words or less. Start your response with "I think," and respond as if you were explaining this to an elementary school student.

(A good answer will be clear and logical, and it will further discuss the same idea you wrote about in the previous question.)

I think the North had more factories and businesses because they had more resources like coal and iron, and they had more people living there. The South had a lot of farms because they had a warmer climate and good soil for growing crops like cotton.
