Union attack on Richmond ends in rout at Bull Run

Washington, July 21, 1861 - Union forces suffered a serious defeat by Confederate troops at nearby Bull Run today. It was the first major battle of the Civil War. Government officials and Washington society people in their carriages watched the battle from the surrounding countryside.

General Joseph E. Johnston's southern troops stopped a drive by federal units under General Irvin McDowell. The Union troops had launched a drive they hoped would lead to the capture of Richmond, capital of the Confederacy.

During most of the battle, the two sides were evenly matched. Then the Union forces began to get the upper hand. But Confederates were saved by reinforcements brought up by rail. After the arrival of reinforcements, the southern troops gained ground rapidly and a Union retreat began. The retreat quickly turned into a panicked stampede back toward Washington.

At this hour, northern soldiers are still straggling back into Washington. There are fears that confederate General Pierre Beauregard will invade this city.
