Ions

Ions are electrically charged particles that are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons. They can be positively charged, called cations, when they lose electrons, or negatively charged, called anions, when they gain electrons. The charge of an ion is determined by the number of electrons gained or lost. Ions play an important role in chemical reactions and the formation of compounds. They are also involved in various biological processes, such as nerve conduction and muscle contraction.
