The dark reaction, also known as the Calvin cycle or the light-independent reaction, occurs in the stroma of the chloroplast organelle. Specifically, the enzymes and reactions of the Calvin cycle take place in the fluid-filled space surrounding the thylakoid membranes, which is known as the stroma.
