The Maya were best known for practicing a type of farming called slash-and-burn or swidden agriculture. This farming technique involves cutting down and burning vegetation in a plot of land, and then farming the cleared area for a few years before moving on to a new plot. The burned vegetation provides nutrients to the soil, allowing crops to grow, but the soil fertility eventually depletes, requiring the farmers to repeat the process elsewhere.
