Extension: Your body is regulated by several processes. These processes rely heavily on enzymes. If enzymes are not present or functioning properly, health conditions can occur. Below are three health conditions caused by improperly functioning enzymes. Select one condition from the list that follows to research. Don’t forget to use at least 3 reputable sources. Write a brief paragraph summarizing its causes, symptoms, and treatments. You will share your findings in a small group. In your response be sure to include:

The scientific and/or common name of the condition
What enzyme is not present or functioning properly?
Signs and symptoms
Who is typically impacted by this condition?
What treatments (if any) exist
List at least 3 links you used in your research.

Condition: Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance is a common digestive disorder caused by the insufficient production or absence of the enzyme lactase, which is responsible for breaking down lactose, the sugar found in milk and dairy products. The scientific name for lactose intolerance is lactase deficiency. When lactase is not functioning properly, lactose remains undigested in the small intestine, leading to various symptoms. Common symptoms include bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and gas after consuming dairy products. People of all ages can be impacted by lactose intolerance, but it is more prevalent in certain ethnic groups, such as Asians, Africans, and Native Americans. Treatment typically involves managing the consumption of lactose-containing foods and beverages. This can be achieved by avoiding or limiting dairy products or using lactase supplements that aid in lactose digestion.
