Mosses spend most of their life cycle in the haploid gametophyte phase. The gametophyte is the dominant stage in the moss life cycle and it is where the plant carries out most of its physiological activities. The sporophyte phase, which is diploid, is relatively short-lived and dependent on the gametophyte for nutrition and support.
