The difference in density between oceanic and continental plates is one of the main causes of subduction zones. When an oceanic plate, which is denser, collides with a continental plate, it tends to slide beneath the less dense continental plate and sink into the mantle. This process is known as subduction and often leads to the formation of trenches and volcanic activity.
