The colonial officer who plotted to surrender the colonial fort at West Point to the British during the American Revolution was General Benedict Arnold. Benedict Arnold believed that the British would offer him a significant reward for betraying his fellow patriots. However, his plot was exposed, and he ultimately defected to the British side in 1780.
