Geology first used the principle of superposition to develop the geologic time scale. This principle states that in any undisturbed sequence of rocks, the youngest rocks are found on top, while the oldest rocks are found at the bottom. Geologists observed the different layers of sedimentary rocks, and through their relative position, they could infer the relative ages of those rocks. This laid the foundation for the geologic time scale.
