Essay: Tell us about your personal journey, your role models, what obstacles you've overcome, how Jose's legacy impacts you, your philanthropic vision, and the power of education.
Personal Journey & Obstacles: Going through identity crisis, Not being Hispanic enough to be in Mexico, but here in the United States being too Mexican, also dealing with racism, not being treated the same as other people with a different color skin. Having to work 5 times harder than everyone to prove that just because I’m a different color skin, I can do anything any other people could do. Having people try to have me “fit in a box” so to speak and try to fit in with other people.

Role Models: My parents, it may sound cliche or like everyone else. But my parents went through so many difficulties to help me and my little sister to where we are now. Coming from Mexico, and from a poor family, my parents didn’t have the opportunities that I have now. They are my strongest role models, it makes me happy to be their daughter and have such strong people to look up to, because no matter what challenges, with my dad at a young age working 2 jobs to pay for a home and my mom raising me working double jobs and both my parents dealing with many family issues. It inspires me to help in any way I can and to fight and have strong determination for what I want.

Jose's Legacy: Jose Prado's legacy impacts me in a profound way. His dedication to supporting his daughter's education journey reflects the values my own parents have instilled in me. Like Jose, my parents have always emphasized the importance of education as a means to create opportunities and improve our lives. Jose's story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by parents who strive to provide a better future for their children. His commitment to his daughter's education motivates me to continue pushing forward, even in the face of adversity.

Philanthropic Vision: Inspired by Jose's legacy, my philanthropic vision is to support and empower first-generation college students, particularly those from marginalized communities. I understand the unique challenges these students face, as I have experienced them firsthand. Through my own journey, I have learned the importance of mentorship, guidance, and financial assistance in navigating the college process. Thus, my philanthropic vision involves establishing mentorship programs, scholarships, and resource centers to ensure that first-generation students have the support they need to succeed.

The Power of Education: Education holds the power to transform lives. It empowers individuals to break free from the cycles of poverty and inequality. As a first-generation student, I have witnessed the transformative power of education in my own life. It has opened doors and opportunities that were once unimaginable. Education has allowed me to challenge societal expectations, overcome self-doubt, and discover my own potential. I firmly believe that every individual, regardless of their background, deserves access to quality education. By investing in education, we not only improve individual lives but also build stronger and more equitable communities.

In conclusion, my personal journey has been shaped by the challenges of identity crisis, racism, and societal pressures. However, the unwavering support of my parents, coupled with the inspiration from Jose Prado's legacy, has motivated me to persevere and strive for excellence. I aim to honor Jose's memory by supporting other first-generation students and breaking down barriers to education. Education has transformed my life, and I am determined to create a positive impact in the lives of others by empowering them through education.
