The Sugar Act, also known as the Revenue Act of 1764, was implemented by the British government in the American colonies to increase taxes on imported sugar, molasses, and other goods. Under this act, the tax on sugar was reduced from six pence per gallon to 3 pence per gallon, which was meant to discourage smuggling and increase revenue for the British government.
