The trophic level that is always a necessity in an energy pyramid or food chain is the producers, also known as the primary producers or autotrophs. These are organisms that can convert sunlight energy into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis. They are usually plants or algae that form the base of the food chain by producing their own food. All other organisms in higher trophic levels depend on the energy and nutrients derived from these primary producers.
