Before replication, DNA exists as chromatin. During this time, it is loosely packed and accessible for transcription and protein production. However, once DNA replication occurs, the chromatin condenses and becomes tightly coiled, forming chromosomes. These chromosomes can then be easily segregated and passed on to daughter cells during cell division.
