The name "Indonesia" is derived from two Greek words, "Indos" meaning "Indian" and "nesos" meaning "island." It was coined in the 19th century by British anthropologist George Windsor Earl to describe the regions of the Indian Archipelago. The name gradually gained popularity and was officially adopted as the country's name when it gained its independence in 1945.
