The first time you saw a play, it may have seemed like something so new. Would you believe plays have been around for th0ousands of years since the early days of Greece? Ancient Rome helped us develop our government. Trade started all those years ago too. Let’s look at how ancient societies have had so much influence on our modern day.
Theater was a popular thing in Ancient Greece and Rome. Greek actors were always men and boys, however, sometimes in Rome woman could have small roles. The acter wore masks to show who their character was and what their emotions were. In Greece plays were usually either tragedies with moral messages, or comedies that sometime made fun of important people at the time. And Romes plays were later aided for by wealthy to gain popularity. The stories involved kidnapped heiresses, foolish old men, and cunning enslaved people; Plays were a great source of entertainment.
Ancient Greece's government was organized as a city-state called the polis, and the government wasn't just in charge of the city, but the surrounding villages and countryside. Unlike Greece’s government, Rome's government had three branches, and the government didn't just rule one little parcel of land, it ruled the entire Rome population. The three branches are Senate was the wealthy elite who guided other branches because they considered themselves wiser. Then there were the Magistrates who were high officials elected by the assembly. Last but not least, the highest Magistrate was called a Consul. They led the army, served as judges, and had bodyguards called Lictors. If this sounds familiar, it is because this system greatly influenced the government of the United States.
Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome were very similar in economics. They both traded with other countries, and it was easier for them to trade because they were by the sea. Greece’s craftsmen made goods such as jewelry weapons, furniture, and pottery. It was easier for Rome to trade because the army men built roads because it was the time of Pax Romana (Roman Peace) and for Rome merchant ships carried wheat to Rome from Egypt, and wine and olive oil were brought in from north. In our time, much is transported by water and land.
