The invention that is most responsible for the expansion of enslaved labor in Georgia is the cotton gin (c). The cotton gin, invented by Eli Whitney in 1793, greatly increased the efficiency of cotton production by quickly separating the seeds from the cotton fiber. This led to a massive increase in cotton production and a subsequent increased demand for enslaved labor in the southern states, including Georgia, to cultivate and harvest cotton.
