What is a suffix?

In linguistics, a suffix is a morpheme (a meaningful linguistic unit) that is attached to the end of a word or the stem of a word to create a new word or alter the meaning of the original word. Suffixes can indicate different grammatical categories, such as tense, number, case, or degree, and they can also add information about the word's function or provide insight into its etymology. Examples of suffixes include -s (marks plural nouns) and -ed (indicates past tense for regular verbs).
