The NASA program that brought people to the moon was known as the Apollo program. This program was initiated in 1961 and successfully landed the first humans on the moon on July 20, 1969, with the Apollo 11 mission. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first and second humans to walk on the lunar surface, while Michael Collins orbited above in the Command Module. The Apollo program continued until 1972, completing a total of six manned landings on the moon with Apollo 17 being the last mission to take humans to the moon.
