Dred Scott was known for being an enslaved African American man who, along with his wife Harriet, sued for their freedom in the landmark Supreme Court case known as Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857). The court case fueled tensions leading up to the American Civil War and ultimately denied the rights of African Americans, stating that they were not citizens and therefore could not sue in federal courts.
