As a tasty bite of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, my journey into the human digestive system begins in the mouth. After being bitten off from the sandwich, I am mixed and moistened with saliva as the person chews, breaking me down into smaller pieces.
Next, I travel down the esophagus, a muscular tube that carries me from the mouth to the stomach. With the help of rhythmic contractions called peristalsis, I am pushed downward into the stomach, where digestion continues.
Upon entering the stomach, I encounter stomach acid and various enzymes, which further break me down and dissolve any remaining solid pieces. Gradually, I am transformed into a blob-like substance known as chyme.
Now, the adventure takes me into the small intestine, the primary site of nutrient absorption in the body. Here, I am exposed to additional digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas and bile from the gallbladder. These substances aid in the breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, allowing the body to absorb the nutrients.
Finally, I reach the large intestine, where water and electrolytes are absorbed from the remaining chyme. Eventually, I am processed into waste material and stored in the rectum until eliminated through the body's excretory system.
