The High School Step Team Karla’s cousin Jade urged her to join the step team. “This afternoon you should definitely try out!” Jade suggested after the final bell rang. “I know she wants the best for me,” Karla thought to herself, “but I’m not sure I’d be any good, and I’d feel embarrassed if I messed up in front of others.” Karla had seen step teams in action: they stomped, they clapped, and they performed all kinds of skillful, synchronized moves. “Our team is not as amazing as professional steppers, but we have a lot of fun!” Jade said. “Also, if you join the team, you will instantly have forty new friends!” “I like the idea of forty new friends,” Karla thought to herself. “Still, I’m worried about bringing up my math grade. I’d better play it safe for now," she decided. “I really appreciate your concern, but I’ve got to say no thanks for now,” Karla told Jade. “I’m going for after-school help in math.” As Karla turned away from Jade and walked down the hall towards the math class, she pictured her cousin shrugging her shoulders. “Okay, do whatever you think is best,” Jade said. “I’ll see you at home.” Karla went to the after-school math session. The work was challenging, and she had to concentrate. The teacher said nice things to Karla about her efforts to grasp the ideas they were studying. “And yet,” Karla thought, “I still have a lot of work and study ahead of me.” When the after-school math session

ended, Karla walked out of the classroom feeling proud. She had made progress and knew that by dedicating more time and effort, she could improve her math grade.

As she made her way home, Karla couldn't help but wonder about the step team. She imagined the energy and excitement of performing with a group of friends. The idea of stepping out of her comfort zone and trying something new excited her, but she couldn't shake off the nagging feeling of her current responsibilities, especially her math grade.

When Karla arrived home, Jade asked about her day. Karla explained how the math session went and how she felt motivated to work harder. Jade listened intently and then asked about the step team once again.

"I know you're worried about your math grade, but joining the step team doesn't mean you have to give up on your studies," Jade suggested. "You can balance both and still have fun."

Karla pondered over Jade's words. She realized that she could indeed manage her time effectively and prioritize her responsibilities. After some thought, Karla made up her mind.

"You know what, Jade? I've been thinking, and I've decided to give the step team a try," Karla announced. "I'll work hard on my math, attend the after-school sessions, and also dedicate time to practicing with the step team."

Jade's face lit up with excitement. "That's amazing, Karla! I know you'll do great. And remember, I'll be there to support you every step of the way, whether it's math or stepping."

Karla felt a surge of confidence and gratitude towards her cousin. With Jade's support and her determination, Karla knew she could excel in both academics and extracurricular activities.

The next day, Karla approached the step team coach and expressed her interest in joining. The coach welcomed her warmly and explained the practice schedule and expectations. Karla was thrilled to be a part of the team and eager to meet her new friends.

Over the weeks that followed, Karla found a balance between her math studies and stepping practice. She formed strong bonds with her teammates and discovered a newfound love for performing. She realized that taking risks and trying new things could lead to personal growth and enrich her high school experience.

Karla's math grade also began to improve steadily as she dedicated time and effort to her studies. With the support of her classmates, teacher, and cousin, Karla was able to build a strong foundation in math and overcome her initial worries.

In the end, Karla's decision to join the step team turned out to be one of the best choices she made in high school. Not only did she gain new friends and experiences, but she also learned the importance of balance, perseverance, and the ability to overcome challenges.
