The cells that produce energy in the body are the mitochondria. Mitochondria are often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cells because they generate most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the main source of energy used by the cells. Mitochondria are found in large numbers in cells that require a lot of energy, such as muscle cells.
