An allele is a form or version of a gene. It is one of the possible variants of a gene that can exist at a specific locus or location on a chromosome. Alleles can be either dominant (where the trait they control is expressed in the presence of other alleles) or recessive (where the trait they control is only expressed in the absence of dominant alleles).
