Helpful Hints for the Unit 5 Portfolio

Converting Within a System (8 points)
Mia’s shelter will look something like this when it is complete. The roof may or may not be there depending on your solution for number 2.

#1 Convert the three lengths given from inches to feet 1st. Then answer parts a-c.

# 2 Find the area of the roof using the dimensions you found for #1. Find the area of each of the boards offered. You will have to convert so that all of the units are the same. I suggest you convert them all to feet since we used feet in part 1.
Remember when you convert square units, you must square the conversion factor. For instance, 1 ft = 12 inch but 1 ft2 = 122 in2 which means 1ft2 = 144 inch2

Converting Between Systems (8 points)
#1 Use the conversions given, 1liters = 4.23 cups = 2.11 pints = 1.06 quarts = .26 gallons, to convert each ingredient to liters. From there you should be able to answer the question.
#2 For part B, you will select a number and then convert to pounds. For part C, go from kilograms to pounds, then pounds to ounces.

Calculating Sales Tax (4 points)
Do NOT use the calculator in this section. Do all of your calculations by hand. I expect to see all of your steps.
Select a number between 10 and 20 that is not a whole dollar. For example, $11.40 or $15.50…etc. Please show your steps and let me know the website where you found the tax information.
