In 1607, colonists from England arrived in what is now Virginia. There, they established Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in America. Americans recognize the importance of the founding of Jamestown and its influence on the nation's culture and values. In 2007, a May 13th ceremony honoring the 400th anniversary of Jamestown was the centerpiece of an elaborate 18-month commemoration that officials had been planning for a decade. Virginia has thrown major Jamestown celebrations every 50 years, but this one gave more recognition to three cultures—English, African, and Native American—all of which were present at Jamestown in the 17th century. Jamestown was founded as a business venture in which a English company sold stocks to people wanting to profit from new resources.
