total fertility rate

Total fertility rate (TFR) refers to the average number of live births a woman would have during her lifetime if the birth rates remained unchanged over her reproductive period. It is often used as an indicator of the fertility level of a population and is influenced by factors such as the age at which women start having children, the use of contraception, and cultural and socio-economic factors. A TFR of around 2.1 is generally considered to be the replacement level, meaning that the population would remain stable over time.
