The Proclamation of 1763 was issued by the British government in order to assert control over the newly acquired territories in North America following the French and Indian War. Its primary goal was to alleviate tensions between the Indigenous tribes and the British colonists by halting westward expansion of the colonies. This decision was made to avoid costly conflicts with Native Americans and to establish a more manageable system of governance in the newly acquired territories.
