Nitrogen from animal waste can be stored in bodies of water as nitrate (NO3-) or ammonium (NH4+). These forms of nitrogen can dissolve in water and be transported to aquatic ecosystems, where they can contribute to nutrient pollution and cause problems such as algal blooms and oxygen depletion.
