People have been traveling into space for decades. So far, however, they have stayed pretty close to Earth. In May 2011, NASA announced that it had built an ideal spacecraft for a mission that could take astronauts to distant locations never before visited by humankind. It is the Orion capsule, a vehicle the agency has been developing for years. NASA officials hope that with some additional research and engineering, the Orion spacecraft will permit a manned trip to Mars. Each 23-ton (21-metric-ton) capsule would take four astronauts on a 21-day trip.
