To become a member of the Deaf Community, losing one's hearing is not the sole requirement. While losing one's hearing can be one factor that leads someone to identify as a member of the Deaf Community, there are other aspects that contribute to one's membership. These aspects include cultural and linguistic factors. The Deaf Community is comprised of individuals who share a common language, American Sign Language (ASL) in the United States, and a shared culture that revolves around the Deaf experience and identity. Therefore, simply losing one's hearing does not automatically make someone a member of the Deaf Community.
