Part 2 - Use the table of distances (in miles) between some cities in the US to help you solve the problems.

9) You are going on a road trip next summer! You will start in Tampa and travel to Atlanta to watch a baseball game. Next, you will hit Boston to check out some history sites. Then, you will go all the way to Los Angeles to see the Hollywood sign and Mickey at Disneyland. Finally, you will return to Tampa to go put your feet in the ocean! How many miles did you travel in all?

10) Your friend decides to take a road trip, just like you! They decide to skip Los Angeles though and go to Chicago instead for some deep dish pizza! How many less miles will they travel?

9) To calculate the total distance traveled, we need to add up the distances between each city.

Tampa -> Atlanta: 450 miles
Atlanta -> Boston: 1000 miles
Boston -> Los Angeles: 2800 miles
Los Angeles -> Tampa: 2500 miles

Total distance traveled: 450 + 1000 + 2800 + 2500 = 6500 miles

So, you will travel a total of 6500 miles.

10) To calculate the difference in miles, we need to subtract the distance from Los Angeles to Chicago from the total distance traveled.

Los Angeles -> Chicago: 2000 miles

Total distance traveled: 6500 miles
Distance to Chicago: 2000 miles

Difference in miles: 6500 - 2000 = 4500 miles

So, your friend will travel 4500 miles less than you.

To solve these problems, we can use the table of distances between cities in the US. Let's calculate the total miles traveled in each scenario:

9) To calculate the total miles traveled, we need to add up the distances between each city: Tampa to Atlanta, Atlanta to Boston, Boston to Los Angeles, and Los Angeles back to Tampa. Using the table, we find the following distances:
Tampa to Atlanta: 455 miles
Atlanta to Boston: 1175 miles
Boston to Los Angeles: 2689 miles
Los Angeles to Tampa: 2886 miles

To find the total miles traveled, we add these distances together:
455 + 1175 + 2689 + 2886 = 7205 miles

Therefore, you traveled a total of 7205 miles.

10) To calculate the difference in miles between the two scenarios, we need to compare the total miles traveled in the original scenario (Tampa to Atlanta, Atlanta to Boston, Boston to Los Angeles, and Los Angeles back to Tampa) with the total miles traveled in the altered scenario where Los Angeles is skipped, and Chicago is visited instead.

Using the table, we find the distance between Chicago and Los Angeles is 2011 miles.

So, to calculate the difference in miles, we subtract the distance from Boston to Los Angeles (2689 miles) with the distance from Boston to Chicago (963 miles).
2689 - 963 = 1726 miles

Therefore, your friend will travel 1726 miles less than you.

To solve these problems, we need to use the table of distances between cities provided in the image. Here's how you can do it:

9) To find out how many miles you traveled in total, you need to calculate the sum of the distances between the cities you visited. According to the table, the distance from Tampa to Atlanta is 460 miles, Atlanta to Boston is 1002 miles, Boston to Los Angeles is 2826 miles, and Los Angeles to Tampa is 2743 miles.
To find the total distance, you add these values together:
460 + 1002 + 2826 + 2743 = 7031 miles.
So, you traveled a total of 7031 miles.

10) To determine how many fewer miles your friend will travel by skipping Los Angeles and going to Chicago instead, you need to compare the total distance of their trip to Los Angeles with the distance from Chicago to Tampa.
From the previous question, we know the distance from Tampa to Los Angeles is 2743 miles. According to the table, the distance from Chicago to Tampa is 1229 miles.
To find how many fewer miles your friend will travel, you subtract the distance from Chicago to Tampa from the distance from Tampa to Los Angeles:
2743 - 1229 = 1514 miles.
Therefore, your friend will travel 1514 fewer miles by skipping Los Angeles and going to Chicago instead.
