Commedia dell'arte, performed in sixteenth-century Italy, was the first professional form of theater. Troupes of travelling actors played a collection of "stock" characters, always with the same names, traits, and costumes. Like modern sitcoms, the characters were the same, but the plot varied. Plays were acrobatic and physical (the word slapstick comes from a common prop used in Commedia), always lighthearted, and never followed a script. Instead, the actors adapted their theatrics to recent events or local personas, which added to the humor. The very best troupes were invited to perform for the aristocracy and were paid handsomely.
