Street Lights in the Neighborhood

Did you know that most car accidents happen at night? In my neighborhood, we barely have any street lights to illuminate the street. There are street lights but, the amount is limited. My family asked the construction workers when they're going to add more lights to our street. The construction workers told us that they’re going to put up more lights when they get more government funding and when they finish all of the houses. Today, I’m going to cover how many streetlights my neighborhood has, how it is not safe for the community, and how streetlights keep criminals at bay.

The approximate amount of street lights in my neighborhood is roughly 60-98. This may seem like a lot but it's not because our neighborhood has more than 50 houses and this amount is not even close to enough to cover the whole neighborhood. “Streetlights play an important role in creating safer streets – whether by preventing traffic accidents or reducing crime. The well-documented impact of street lighting on driver behavior, pedestrian visibility, and criminal activity makes intelligent street lighting a critical public safety technology.”(5 Ways to Turn Streetlights into a Powerful Public Safety Technology) Many houses on my street are starting to put garden lights near their driveways to make it safer when they are backing up. The majority of my neighbors find this very unfair.

In contrast, having no lights concerns me due to the amount of kids living in my neighborhood. I interviewed my dad and he said, “I feel like it's dangerous for kids when they walk to the bus stop.” I also interviewed my mother and she gave a completely different answer. She stated that children should be accompanied by their parents if they are going to go to the bus stop. Streetlights improve the quality of a neighborhood and make it safer for citizens to live. During another interview with my sister, Aja, she gave a tip on how to prevent accidents from happening. She said, “If cars and trucks are parked on the side of the road when there are no lights, somebody will get in an accident…I suggest they move their vehicles to make the roads safer.”

Lastly, having no streetlights can be dangerous due to criminals being around. “Lack of natural light during nighttime in the urban environment was always a problem. From basic inconvenience that people cannot see where they are going to the greater chance of being attacked or mugged during the night.”(History of Street Lighting.) In a neighborhood, street lights are essential to the safety of the citizens living there. Criminals often lurk where you least expect them to. Sometimes robbers are spotted during the day, but it is less common to see them due to them not having anything covering their faces. There are ways to spot robbers quickly and effectively. Many people use doorbell cameras to prevent criminals from stealing, most often criminals see these cameras and cover their faces. Police Departments are still trying to find ways to prevent robberies from happening by asking people to install certain apps, buy and put up cameras, and call 911 if they see a robbery happen.

In conclusion, street lights are very important in the neighborhood. I covered how many streetlights my neighborhood has, how it is not safe for the community, and how streetlights keep criminals at bay. These are only a few reasons why streetlights are so important in neighborhoods. Streetlights have changed, and they're so much safer than they used to be but, they need to be used properly and safely.

Title: Street Lights in the Neighborhood

Introduction:
Car accidents are more likely to happen at night, and having adequate street lighting in neighborhoods is crucial in ensuring community safety. However, my neighborhood lacks sufficient street lights, which not only poses a risk to residents but also invites criminal activity. This paper will discuss the insufficient number of street lights in my neighborhood, the safety concerns it raises, and the role of street lighting in deterring criminals.

Insufficient Number of Street Lights:
Currently, there are approximately 60-98 street lights in my neighborhood, which may initially seem like a significant number. However, considering the number of houses in the neighborhood (over 50), this falls short of providing adequate coverage. According to "5 Ways to Turn Streetlights into a Powerful Public Safety Technology," street lighting plays a vital role in creating safer streets. Insufficient lighting affects driver behavior, pedestrian visibility, and crime rates. Many residents have resorted to installing their own garden lights near driveways to enhance safety, which highlights the widespread concern about the lack of sufficient lighting.

Safety Concerns for the Community:
The absence of ample lighting in my neighborhood raises concerns, particularly in terms of the safety of children walking to the bus stop. In an interview with my dad, he expressed worry about the dangerous conditions that children face during their commute. On the other hand, my mother suggested that children should be accompanied by parents when accessing the bus stop. Nevertheless, it is evident that streetlights are essential for improving the overall safety and quality of a neighborhood. Additionally, my sister Aja provided a valuable tip to prevent accidents, recommending that vehicles should not be parked on roads with no lights, as it poses a danger to drivers. Moving vehicles off the roads would contribute to safer conditions for everyone.

Role of Streetlights in Deterring Criminal Activity:
The absence of streetlights also creates an environment that is appealing to criminals. As stated in the "History of Street Lighting," the lack of natural light during nighttime in urban areas has always been problematic. It not only inconveniences people but also increases the likelihood of being attacked or mugged. Criminals tend to take advantage of poorly lit areas, and their activities often go unnoticed during the night. To combat this, many people utilize doorbell cameras to deter criminals, as the presence of such cameras often prompts them to hide their identities. Police departments advise installing security apps, using surveillance cameras, and promptly contacting authorities through 911 when a robbery is witnessed.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the presence of sufficient street lights in neighborhoods is of utmost importance. In this paper, I discussed the inadequate number of street lights in my neighborhood, the safety concerns it raises for the community, and the role of street lighting in deterring criminal activity. These are just a few reasons why streetlights are crucial for maintaining neighborhood safety. Although street lighting has significantly improved over time, it is essential to utilize and maintain these lights properly and safely for the well-being of residents.
