Word Processing Text
word processing basics

As you type, it is not necessary to press the Enter key at the end of every line. Word processing programs use something called word wrap to move any text that will not fit at the end of the line down to the next line. If you make a mistake as you type, use the backspace key to erase your mistake. When you have finished typing, you should give your file a name so that it can be identified later.

A character is any single letter, number or symbol. A font is a set of characters that have the same design. Each font has a name such as calibri, arial or times new roman. Fonts are defined as serif, sans serif or decorative fonts. The word serif means “feet” in French. The word sans means “without” in French. A sans serif font then is one without little feet at the ends of the characters. A serif font is one that does have little “feet” at the end of the characters. A sans serif font is easier to read. Font sizes are measured in points. Point size means the height of the characters, with one point equaling approximately 1/72 of an inch. Point sizes range from very small, 6-point, to 72 points or higher.

In addition to changing the shape and size of the characters, you can emphasize text in a word processing program in a number of ways. The font group on the home ribbon includes buttons such the b, the I, and u, to bold, italicize or underline text. These are called text attributes. You can use this same group to change case, grow or shrink the font, change the color of the text, or highlight it. Text effects is also available. Text effects included in most word processing software programs are outline, shadow, glow and reflection. To remove the effects, choose the clear all formatting button if it is available in your software package.
