One example of social reform during the French Revolution is the abolition of feudalism. In August 1789, the National Assembly passed the Decree on the Abolition of Feudalism, which abolished the feudal system of privileges and obligations that had existed in France for centuries. This decree abolished serfdom, feudal dues, manorial courts, and other forms of feudal oppression. It also decreed that all feudal rights and privileges were to be bought out by the government and paid for by the former serfs and peasants.
