The 16th amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified in 1913 and gave Congress the power to levy an income tax. The amendment overturned earlier Supreme Court decisions that had ruled a federal income tax unconstitutional. The 16th amendment remains in effect today and allows the federal government to collect taxes on individual and corporate income.
