Eleanor Gertrude Simpson was born on January 2, 1935, in the small, rural town of Greenville, Mississippi. The first of four children, Eleanor was raised by her loving parents, Jack and Margaret Simpson, who instilled in her the importance of hard work, education and strong family values.
Eleanor excelled academically from an early age, attending Greenville's public schools where she participated in various activities and clubs. Her passion for literature, history and languages made her a voracious reader and a dedicated student. Upon graduating from Greenville High School in 1952, she earned a scholarship to attend Mississippi State College for Women, where she pursued a Bachelor's degree in English Literature.
While attending college, Eleanor met and fell in love with Henry Charles Johnson, a young man from a neighboring town. After dating for two years, they married in 1956, a year after Eleanor graduated with her degree. The couple moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where Henry began working as an insurance agent and Eleanor found employment as an English teacher at a local high school.
In 1961, Eleanor and Henry became the proud parents of their first child, a daughter named Susan. Two years later, the Johnson family welcomed their son, Michael. As a dedicated mother, Eleanor balanced her professional and personal life gracefully. She continued to work as a beloved teacher in Jackson, eventually earning her Master's degree in Education in 1967.
Outside of her professional career, Eleanor was highly involved in her community. She volunteered regularly at her church and served on various committees at her children's schools. Her love for literature led her to establish a local book club, encouraging fellow community members to engage in discussions and appreciate literature from various genres and eras.
Throughout her life, Eleanor served as an exemplary role model for her family and friends. Always selfless and compassionate, Eleanor was generous with her time, resources and love. She encouraged her children and students to pursue their dreams and to continue learning, even in the face of adversity.
Eleanor lived a life of love, dedication and service to her family, students and community. She passed away on June 19, 2010, leaving behind a legacy of inspired individuals who were touched by her wisdom, kindness and unwavering spirit. Today, the Eleanor G. Simpson Memorial Scholarship Fund continues to provide financial support for deserving high school graduates in Mississippi, ensuring that her passion for education will continue to touch the lives of future generations.
