Mum made 3 dozen small cakes and 4 large cakes for our school fete. The small cakes sold for 15 pence each and the large cakes for £1.25 each. How much was made from them?

There are 12 cakes in a dozen so Mum made 3 x 12 = 36 small cakes.

She sold each small cake for 15 pence so she made 36 x 15 = 540 pence from the small cakes.
There were 4 large cakes, each sold for £1.25 so she made 4 x 125 = 500 pence from the large cakes.
The total amount made from all the cakes is 540 + 500 = 1040 pence or £10.40.
