Elizabeth Cady Stanton was not inspired by a childhood belief to pursue equal rights for women in adulthood. However, her experiences growing up in a conservative family and her education at Emma Willard's Academy for Young Ladies in Troy, New York, where she was taught that women were intellectually and morally equal to men, may have contributed to her passion for women's rights later in life. Additionally, witnessing the limitations placed on women's roles in society, including as wives and mothers, may have also fueled her desire for gender equality.
