who lead the failed attempt to invade the kingdoom of benin

The failed attempt to invade the Kingdom of Benin was led by a British expedition led by Rear Admiral Sir Harry Rawson in 1897. The expedition was sent to punish the Oba (king) of Benin for the alleged violations of treaties and trading agreements and for the killing of a British official. The British force attacked and destroyed the city of Benin, but faced strong resistance from the Benin warriors. Ultimately, the British occupied Benin and exiled the Oba, and the kingdom was eventually incorporated into the British Empire as the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria.
