to establish a legal basis for a permanent government of the new United States. The Articles of Confederation were created to provide a framework for a central government that could unite the 13 states and govern the new country. The Founding Fathers recognized the need for a legal basis for the new government and the Articles of Confederation were the first attempt at creating that framework. However, the weaknesses of the Articles ultimately led to the drafting and adoption of the US Constitution.
