The terms of the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1783, ended the American Revolutionary War and recognized the United States as an independent nation. The treaty established the boundaries of the United States, granted fishing rights to American fishermen in the North Atlantic, and granted the United States the right to navigate the Mississippi River. The treaty also provided for the return of all prisoners of war and the payment of debts owed by the United States to Britain.
