In What We Lost by Sara Zarr, after the search for 13 year old Jody Shaw intensifies, Pastor Charlie (Samara’s Dad) and Erin spend more time with each other, and Sam is convinced that they’re having an affair. What evidence or “proof” does Sam have? What does Sam do about it?
Sam has noticed that Pastor Charlie and Erin have been spending a lot of time together, and that they have been acting differently around each other. She also notices that they have been exchanging secret glances and that they have been avoiding talking about their relationship. Sam is so convinced that they are having an affair that she confronts them about it. She tells them that she knows what is going on and that she is not happy about it. In response, Pastor Charlie and Erin deny the affair and try to explain their behavior. Sam is still not convinced and decides to keep an eye on them.
Sam confronts her father and Erin and tells them she knows exactly what’s going on and that she doesn’t approve.
