The advantage of keeping some DNA needed by mitochondria in the cell’s nucleus and some in the mitochondria itself is that it allows for greater flexibility in the cell’s ability to respond to environmental changes. By having some of the DNA in the nucleus, the cell can quickly access and modify the genetic information it needs to adapt to changing conditions. At the same time, having some of the DNA in the mitochondria itself allows the cell to maintain a stable set of genetic information that is not as easily altered by environmental changes.
