During mitosis, chromosomes attach to the mitotic spindle via specialized proteins called kinetochores. Kinetochores are located at the centromere of each chromosome and are composed of several proteins that interact with microtubules of the spindle. The microtubules attach to the kinetochores and pull the chromosomes apart during mitosis.
