(1) The Chinese first immigrated to America in the mid-19th century, primarily due to economic and political instability in China. Many Chinese immigrants were seeking economic opportunities in the United States, as well as escaping the Taiping Rebellion and other civil wars in China. (2) After immigrating to America, the Chinese settled mainly in the West Coast states, such as California, Oregon, and Washington. They also settled in other parts of the country, such as New York, Massachusetts, and Hawaii. (3) After immigrating to America, the Chinese faced many challenges, such as discrimination, racism, and exclusion from certain jobs and activities. They were also subject to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which prohibited Chinese immigrants from becoming citizens and limited their ability to travel. Sources:
