A cell has 40.4 divisions on the ruler scale.

1 division = 0.35 mm

Eyepiece lens = 10x
Objective lens = 100x

a) What is the magnification?

b) Use the magnification and the image size of the cell to calculate Actual size. Give your answer in micrometers.

i) Work this out WITHOUT the equation. Show all your working out.

ii) Work this out WITH the equation. Show all your working out.

a) Magnification = 10x100x = 1000x

i) Without the equation:

Image size = 40.4 divisions x 0.35 mm = 14.14 mm

Actual size = Image size / Magnification = 14.14 mm / 1000x = 0.01414 mm = 14.14 micrometers

ii) With the equation:

Actual size = Image size / Magnification = 40.4 divisions x 0.35 mm / (10x100x) = 0.01414 mm = 14.14 micrometers
