Why have women been underrepresented in visual art?

Women have been underrepresented in visual art for centuries due to the patriarchal nature of the art world. Historically, women were not allowed to attend art academies or participate in the same art exhibitions as men. This lack of access to education and exhibition opportunities meant that women were not able to develop their skills and showcase their work to the same extent as men. Additionally, the art world has long been dominated by male critics and curators, who have often favored male artists and overlooked the work of female artists. This has perpetuated the idea that women are not as capable of creating great art as men, and has contributed to the underrepresentation of women in visual art.
